True Stories

I dreamed of living in a house.

Tammie's story begins when she first came into the Healthy Families Morgan County program offered through PACT (Parents and Children Together) at the age of 15, after giving birth to her first son, Tyler. Since Tammie knew that education was important, she got registered at Horizon High School with the help of her family support worker at PACT. Within two years, she proudly received her high school diploma. Shortly after graduating, she received a part-time job, which soon turned into a full time job. Tammie worked very hard at this job and was eager to work extra hours. She continued to work hard and soon was promoted to Assistant Manager.

Throughout her time with the Healthy Families program, Tammie was an active participant. She was consistent with her home visits and engaged in parent/child activities offered by PACT through group meetings for parents. She made sure that all immunizations for her children were given on time and kept all necessary medical appointments. Most importantly, she maintained housing, employment, and a strong, loving relationship with her children. According to Tammie, she would "recommend any first time moms, especially single moms, to join PACT because you will always have someone to talk to whenever you have problems. There's not too many people who you can say are the sweetest, good hearted people who really care and are dedicated." Tammie was an active participant in the Healthy Families Morgan County program for five years. During that time, she became a responsible, loving, educated woman who, as a single parent, supports three wonderful little boys.

Throughout her first three years in the Healthy Families program, Tammie lived in two apartments but dreamed of living in a house, especially after her second son was born. With the help of her Family Support Worker at PACT, she applied for and was approved for a house through Habitat for Humanity. Her house, the very first Women Build house built in Morgan County, was recently completed and her dream of becoming a homeowner was finally fulfilled.

Tammie continues to be a hard working, loving, nurturing parent; and thanks to Habitat for Humanity, she will be able to do so in a home built by a community with love and pride.

True Stories

It will be Christmas in July!
Like the Phoenix who rises from the ashes
Our only source of heat was a wood burning stove.
I dreamed of living in a house.
All hope seemed gone.
